The Rado Anatom’s Material Revolution
One of my core memories as a watch lover is that of me as a teenager in the mid-1980s walking past a watch shop in Irvine, California, and noticing the Rado Anatom in the display window. It was a stylishly slim and square-shaped watch with a slightly curved case made from a tungsten-carbide alloy. It made quite an impression on me and I returned to the watch shop a second time to explore further. This time, I noticed additional details like the gadroon-patterned dial, which matched the bracelet perfectly. Like an object from a 1980s sci-fi movie, it appeared to be a watch from the future.
Fast forward about forty years, and Rado reintroduced the Anatom in 2023. I still have the same positive impression of the watch, albeit now it is in a more modern sized case made from high-tech ceramic and fitted with a mechanical movement, compared to the quartz movements Rado used in the ’80s.
My impressions lead to an obvious inference: the enduring appeal of the Anatom. It has a timeless appeal that can be credited to its simple yet stylish design and the use of high- tech materials, which makes it relevant in past, present and future contexts.
The Rado Anatom was first released in 1983 as part of the DiaStar collection. The name “Anatom” was chosen for this model because of its curved case that offered an ergonomic design, fitting on the wrist like a curved bracelet. The dimensions were compact and slim with a width of 28mm, a length of 35mm and a case thickness of 6.9mm.
In 2023, Rado reintroduced the Anatom model, which now included a bezel and crown made from high-tech ceramic, along with a middle case constructed of PVD-treated steel. The case dimensions are enlarged to accommodate an automatic movement, with a width of 32.5mm, a length of 46.3mm and a thickness of 11.3mm.
The modern Anatom features beveled edges on the cylindrical sapphire crystal, bezel and bracelet links. The crystal seamlessly integrates into the bezel, and the case tapers to connect with the bracelet, which narrows further to a width of 20mm for better ergonomics and structure.
The Anatom collection is powered by the Rado-exclusive R766 movement, derived from the automatic Caliber ETA 2892. The Caliber R766 operates at a frequency of 3Hz, in contrast to the standard 4Hz ETA movement, and as a result, provides 30 additional hours of power reserve, for a total of 72 hours. The movement is equipped with an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring that offers the advantages of antimagnetism, resistance to temperature fluctuations and shock resistance.
The New Rado Anatom: Dialing Up Comfort and Style
Building on the success of the 2023 relaunch, this year, Rado introduces five new editions of the Anatom, offering a range of color options as well as polished black high-tech ceramic and glossy plasma finishes. The new collection retains the dimensions and some of the characteristics of the 2023 models.
The first two variations of the Rado Anatom feature polished black high-tech ceramic on the bezel and bracelet, a black ceramic crown and a black lacquered dial with an irregularly spaced horizontal line motif. These models are offered in either steel or yellow-gold-colored finishes for the hands, indexes, Rado’s signature rotating anchor symbol under the 12-hour marker, and the connecting links of the bracelet.

The third edition features a gray lacquered dial with the bezel, bracelet and crown made of polished plasma high-tech ceramic. It features rose-gold-colored finishes on the hands, markers, logo and bracelet. The gray color appears more contemporary and less bold compared to the glossy black lacquered variants.
The final two Rado Jubilé editions round up the latest collection with an extra touch of glamor. Each of the Jubilé editions feature a polished black high-tech ceramic bezel and bracelet, a black ceramic crown and a black lacquered dial. The first edition offers a minimalistic dial design with three diamond indexes positioned at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock, complemented by rhodium-colored hands. This design is versatile, making it ideal for daily wear at the workplace and during evening engagements. The second Jubilé edition also includes three diamond indexes on the dial, but these are complemented by black matte printed indexes surrounding the rest of the dial. Additionally, the case features polished stainless steel end pieces set with 38 full-cut Top Wesselton diamonds, while the first four connecting links of the bracelet are similarly decked with 124 full-cut diamonds. This model has the hallmarks of a statement watch, perfect for special occasions and complementing your little black dress.
